Family Sponsorship

Canada’s family sponsorship program allows certain family members of Canadians or permanent residents to immigrate to Canada.
The goal of the family call immigration is “to see that families are reunited in Canada.”

You can sponsor your spouse or partner to become permanent residents of Canada.

If you do, you must be able to:

  • support them financially
  • make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government

Common-law partners are not legally married. Common-law couple must have been living together for at least 1 year, continuously and without any long periods apart.

Conjugal partnership in relation to a sponsor, a person outside Canada who has a binding relationship with a sponsor for at least one year but could not live together due to barriers beyond their control such as immigration barrier, religious, sexual orientation, war, etc.
